Happiness to Me

Happiness – it’s one of those things we all hope for and want for ourselves but it’s also one of those things that is hard to describe. We know what happiness isn’t; you can feel it when you don’t want to get out of bed every morning or find yourself staring off in your room with a pang of sadness in your heart. That can be described as being unhappy. But what is happiness? Is it when none of those feelings exist? Or is that neutral? Is there more to being happy than just not being sad?Β

I personally cannot tell you. I think happiness and what that looks like, varies between people. For me happiness can be described in so many different ways;

Happiness is being okay most mornings to get out of bed, go to work and school, and to face the world;

Having the time to just sit and be, reading my books, watching my shows, and being with the people I love;

Dancing to my favourite songs into the wee hours, or singing my heart out whilst playing my guitar;

Walking around a cozy down I dwell in with a latte in hand;

My sister getting into school and my other sister getting a job offer she really wanted;

Road trips with my significant other and laughing until my chest hurts.

It really is the little things in live that can turn out to be the most important things. The smallest of events can be enough to make your day. Yes it’s true the smallest of things can break your day too but it’s because we focus on it so much. We give these little things power to tear us down because we give them so much attention. I’ve found that my happiness comes from focusing on that things, events and people who make me happy. When bad things happen I accept it, and then I move on. I say (for lack of a better term) Fuck it. Happiness isn’t something you can find in other people – you have to make it yourself by allowing for the that, that makes you happy, to manifest itself everyday. I know it’s hard because when bad things happen, we dwell on it. It’s totally natural – but just try this; tomorrow when you start off your day tell yourself that you are successful, good, and beautiful. I’m serious here – tell yourself in the mirror that you are great. If you don’t believe it, how do you expect other people to view you as a good person and treat you as so. Now, if you encounter that something that makes you angry or sad, allow yourself to feel that emotion for a few minutes and then consciously move on. Tell yourself that it is just a small drop in the bucket and in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter. Tomorrow is another day and the next hour is another hour. This is the practice that I’ve started to employ in my life and I’m starting to notice a difference. I’m doing more that I want to do and I feel lighter. I feel like a weight has lifted off my chest! You can do it – I have faith in you!
